About the Atlanta Flames

The Flames were one of two 1972 NHL expansion franchises (alongside the New York Islanders), founded by Atlanta sports impresario Tom Cousins to fill the brand-new 16,000-seat Omni Coliseum. Coached by Boom Boom Geoffrion in the early years and later by Fred Creighton, the Flames built around goaltender Phil Myre, defenseman Pat Quinn, and centerman Tom Lysiak.

The Flames made the playoffs in six of their eight Atlanta seasons — a remarkable record for a Deep South expansion team in a hockey-mad era — but never won a postseason series. Eric Vail led the team in scoring multiple seasons; Bob MacMillan made the 1979 NHL All-Star team; future Hall of Famer Daniel Bouchard split goaltending duties with Myre. Owner Cousins struggled financially in the late 1970s, and after the 1979–80 season he sold the team to a Calgary-based group led by Nelson Skalbania (yes, the same Nelson Skalbania who briefly owned the Indianapolis Racers and signed teenage Wayne Gretzky). The franchise relocated to Calgary as the Flames in 1980 — where they won the 1989 Stanley Cup. Atlanta wouldn't get NHL hockey back until the Thrashers in 1999. The Flames era remains the most beloved chapter of Georgia hockey history.
