The Buffalo franchise played all four seasons of the AAFC from 1946 to 1949 at Civic Stadium (later War Memorial Stadium). The team competed as the Buffalo Bisons in 1946, then rebranded as the Buffalo Bills for 1947–1949 — a name that would later be adopted by the city's AFL franchise in 1960.
Quarterback George Ratterman led the Bills to one of the better AAFC records in 1948, finishing second in the East. Despite strong on-field results, the Bills were not among the three AAFC franchises selected to join the NFL after 1949. The team folded when the league dissolved, leaving Buffalo without major pro football until the AFL Bills launched in 1960.
