About Buffalo AAFC Football
The franchise debuted as the Buffalo Bisons in 1946, charter members of the All-America Football Conference — the post-WWII rival to the NFL that gave us the Cleveland Browns dynasty, the original San Francisco 49ers, and the original Baltimore Colts. The Bisons were renamed the Buffalo Bills in 1947 after a fan contest, marking the first use of "Buffalo Bills" in pro football and establishing the identity the modern AFL/NFL franchise inherited a decade later.
Coached by Red Dawson and later Lowell "Red" Dawson, the Bills/Bisons featured quarterback George Ratterman, fullback Chet Mutryn, and end Alton Baldwin. They reached the AAFC playoffs in 1948 and tied the Cleveland Browns for the Eastern Division title in 1948, losing the playoff. When the AAFC merged into the NFL after 1949, Buffalo was excluded — only Cleveland, San Francisco, and Baltimore made the cut — and Western New York went without pro football until Lamar Hunt's AFL gave the Bills name a second life in 1960. Royal Retros throwbacks honor the original Buffalo pro football era.
