South Florida Sports History

South Florida's pro sports history is unusually deep for a region best known for its modern Big Four franchises. The Miami Seahawks were a founding member of the All-America Football Conference in 1946 — the same league that gave the country the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, and original Baltimore Colts. The Miami Floridians of the ABA (1968–1972, with the team rebranded simply as The Floridians for the final two seasons) wore some of the ABA's most stylish uniforms (the magenta and black striped look remains iconic in retro basketball circles). The Miami Giants competed in the early Negro Leagues. The West Palm Beach Tropics of the Senior Professional Baseball Association brought retired MLB stars to South Florida in the late 1980s.
