The Oakland Oaks were one of the original teams in the American Basketball Association (ABA) and were named after a team which had folded five years earlier. They were partially owned by entertainer Pat Boone. In their first season, the Oaks were the worst team in the league. Major changes were made the following season with the addition of coach Alex Hannum and all-star Rick Barry who was in a contract dispute with the cross-bay Warriors. The moves paid off, and the Oaks won the championship. Attendance, though, continued to lag. The Oaks realized they could not compete with the Warriors in the Bay Area and after two seasons became the Washington Caps, and a year later the Virginia Squires.
