About the Oakland Oaks
The Oaks were one of the ABA's eleven charter franchises in 1967, partly owned by singer Pat Boone and built specifically to lure Rick Barry away from the NBA's San Francisco Warriors. Barry famously sat out the 1967–68 season due to a court order enforcing his Warriors contract; coached by Bruce Hale (Barry's father-in-law), the Oaks went 22–56 without him.
Everything turned around when Alex Hannum took over as coach for 1968–69. With Barry now eligible (until a knee injury cut his season short at 35 games) and Larry Brown running the offense alongside Doug Moe, Warren Jabali (Rookie of the Year), and Gary Bradds, the Oaks went 60–18, won the Western Division, and beat the Indiana Pacers in five games for the 1969 ABA Championship. It was one of the great single-season turnarounds in pro basketball history. Yet the Oaks were losing money in the Bay Area, and ownership relocated the franchise to Washington as the Caps that summer — the title-winning team never played another home game in Oakland. The franchise eventually became the Virginia Squires, but the Oaks championship remains one of the great Bay Area pro basketball stories.
