About the Los Angeles / Utah Stars

The Stars franchise is one of the great cult chapters in ABA history. After two seasons in Southern California (Anaheim Amigos 1967–68, Los Angeles Stars 1968–70), the team relocated to Salt Lake City for the 1970–71 season as the Utah Stars and immediately won the ABA Championship — defeating the Kentucky Colonels in seven games behind ABA Finals MVP Zelmo Beaty, scoring guard Willie Wise and lights-out shooter Ron Boone. The 1971 title remains the most decorated chapter in ABA Stars history.

The Utah Stars stayed competitive throughout the early 1970s and even helped pioneer the practice of signing high-school stars when they drafted Moses Malone out of Petersburg High School in 1974. But the franchise's financial situation deteriorated and the team folded mid-season in 1975–76, just before the ABA-NBA merger. Most of the Stars' 1976 roster signed elsewhere, and Salt Lake City wouldn't get pro basketball back until the New Orleans Jazz relocated in 1979 to become the Utah Jazz. The Royal Retros Los Angeles / Utah Stars collection celebrates every era of this colorful franchise — Anaheim Amigos through LA Stars through the championship Utah Stars — with apparel for collectors and ABA fans.
