About the Tampa Bay Vipers
The Vipers were the Tampa Bay entry in the 2020 XFL relaunch, the Vince McMahon-Oliver Luck attempt at a more football-serious revival of the league. Coached by Marc Trestman — the longtime CFL Coach of the Year and former Chicago Bears head coach — and quarterbacked by Aaron Murray and Quinton Flowers, the Vipers played their home games at Raymond James Stadium, alongside the NFL's Buccaneers.
Tampa went 1–4 through the abbreviated 2020 season, fourth in the East Division, before COVID-19 forced the XFL to suspend operations on March 12, 2020. The league filed for bankruptcy a month later. Receivers Jalen Tolliver and Daniel Williams caught most of the targets; defensive back Joe Powell was a bright spot. Dany Garcia and Dwayne Johnson eventually bought the assets and rebooted the XFL in 2023, but the Vipers did not return — the new XFL went a different direction with city placements. The 2020 Vipers remain a poignant footnote in the modern alternative-football story.
