About the St. Louis Stallions

The Stallions name has been carried by multiple St. Louis pro football efforts — most famously a 1993 NFL expansion bid backed by James Orthwein and Walter Payton's group that proposed bringing the Stallions to a new dome (eventually built as the Edward Jones Dome) before the league awarded the expansion franchises to Carolina and Jacksonville instead. The Stallions name and uniforms had been designed and were even briefly merchandised before the expansion bid was passed over.

St. Louis ultimately got NFL football back when the Los Angeles Rams relocated in 1995, but the Stallions identity remained beloved by St. Louis sports fans and was later carried by minor-pro and arena-football franchises.
