The St. Louis Stallions were one of five finalists in the early-1990s NFL expansion process — alongside Carolina, Jacksonville, Baltimore, and Memphis — bidding to bring an NFL franchise back to St. Louis after the Cardinals' 1988 departure for Phoenix. The Stallions ownership group was so confident the bid would succeed that construction began on a new downtown domed stadium (the Trans World Dome, later America's Center) ahead of the league's decision.

The NFL ultimately awarded the two 1995 expansion franchises to Carolina (Panthers) and Jacksonville (Jaguars), leaving St. Louis without a team. Robert Kraft's New England Patriots briefly considered relocating to the new stadium and adopting the Stallions name for 1994 before staying in Foxborough at the last minute. The Los Angeles Rams ultimately moved into the stadium for 1995 — keeping their own name. The Stallions never played a game, but the proposed name and identity remain a defining what-could-have-been chapter of the 1990s NFL expansion era.
