The History of Pre-Original Six & Early Pro Hockey

Pro hockey before the NHL Original Six era (1942–1967) was a multi-league, multi-circuit, geographically scattered competition between several rival professional leagues, with the Stanley Cup awarded to a champion that often had to defend the Cup against challengers from rival leagues. The story of pre-Original Six pro hockey is the story of the Patrick brothers, the Western Canada Hockey League, the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, and the rules-and-rink innovations that built the modern game.

The PCHA (1911–1924) — The League That Invented Modern Hockey

The Pacific Coast Hockey Association launched in December 1911 as the brainchild of Frank and Lester Patrick — brothers, former NHA players, and visionary hockey executives. The Patricks built Vancouver's Denman Arena (the first artificial-ice rink in Canada) and Victoria's Patrick Arena to host their new West Coast league.

The PCHA's contributions to hockey are immense. The Patricks introduced jersey numbers (so fans could identify players from the stands), the blue line, the forward pass, the modern penalty system, the playoff format, and most of the framework that the NHL still uses today. They allowed a goaltender to leave his feet and drop to the ice to make a save — the NHL didn't allow that until much later. They scheduled games on a regular weekly cadence and standardized the season length.

From 1914 to 1924 the PCHA competed annually with the eastern National Hockey Association (NHA, the NHL's immediate predecessor) for the Stanley Cup. PCHA franchises won the Cup three times: Vancouver Millionaires (1915), Seattle Metropolitans (1917 — the first American team), and Vancouver Maroons (1922). Cyclone Taylor, Frank Foyston, Mickey MacKay, and Hap Holmes were among the league's stars.

The WCHL/WHL (1921–1926) — The Last Pre-NHL Major League

The Western Canada Hockey League launched in 1921 as a four-team prairie circuit (Edmonton Eskimos, Calgary Tigers, Regina Capitals, Saskatoon Crescents). The league absorbed PCHA franchises in 1925 (becoming the Western Hockey League for its final season) when the PCHA collapsed financially. The Victoria Cougars, originally a PCHA team, won the 1925 Stanley Cup as a WCHL franchise — the last non-NHL team to ever win the Cup.

The WHL folded after the 1925–26 season, with most of its players sold to NHL teams. Lester Patrick brought the WHL's roster (including the Cook brothers, Frank Boucher, and others) to the new New York Rangers, who used that talent to win Stanley Cups in 1928, 1933, and 1940.

The PCHL (1928–1952) — The Pacific Coast's Successor League

After the WHL folded, the Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL) reorganized West Coast pro hockey in 1928, running through the early 1950s as the premier minor-pro league on the West Coast. The PCHL's franchises included the Seattle Eskimos, Tacoma Tigers, Portland Rosebuds, Vancouver Lions, and (later) the Hollywood Wolves and Los Angeles Monarchs. The league shifted membership repeatedly across its lifespan and eventually folded after the 1951–52 season as the modern AHL and other minor-pro circuits absorbed its territory.

The Eastern Hockey League (1933–1973) — The Longest-Running Eastern Minor League

The Eastern Hockey League (EHL) ran for forty seasons as the East Coast's primary minor-pro hockey circuit, with franchises in Atlantic City, Baltimore, New York, Philadelphia, Hartford, Charlotte, Greensboro, Knoxville, Nashville, and dozens of other cities across its long history. The EHL was the developmental ancestor of the modern American Hockey League and ECHL, producing thousands of pro hockey players across four decades.
