About the Minnesota North Stars
The Minnesota North Stars were the NHL's first Minnesota franchise, born out of the league's 1967 expansion that doubled the league from six to twelve teams. The North Stars played at Met Center in Bloomington and quickly became one of the most beloved expansion-era franchises with their distinctive green-and-gold uniforms and the legendary "N" star logo — widely considered one of the best designs in hockey history.
The North Stars produced some of the great moments of 1980s and early 1990s hockey. The 1981 squad reached the Stanley Cup Final behind Bobby Smith, Neal Broten and Dino Ciccarelli before losing to the New York Islanders. The 1991 squad, led by future Hall of Famer Mike Modano and a 25-year-old Brian Bellows, made one of the more famous deep playoff runs in modern hockey history — knocking off the defending-champion Edmonton Oilers and the heavily favored Chicago Blackhawks before losing in the Cup Final to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Modano in particular became the face of Minnesota hockey and one of the most prolific American-born scorers in NHL history.
Ownership instability eventually pushed the franchise out of Minnesota — the team relocated to Dallas in 1993 to become the Stars (winning the 1999 Stanley Cup in their new home). Minnesota wouldn't get NHL hockey back until the Wild debuted in 2000. But the North Stars' green-and-gold legacy lives on. The Royal Retros Minnesota North Stars collection celebrates every era of that history — Met Center magic, two Cup Final runs and the timeless "N" star — with apparel for collectors and Minnesota hockey fans.
