About the Michigan Panthers

The Michigan Panthers were the United States Football League's first dynasty. Founded in 1982 and based in Pontiac, Michigan, the Panthers debuted in the spring of 1983 at the cavernous Pontiac Silverdome and promptly won the inaugural USFL Championship, defeating the Philadelphia Stars 24–22 behind quarterback Bobby Hebert and a star-studded receiving corps led by future NFL Pro Bowler Anthony Carter. Owner A. Alfred Taubman spared no expense, building one of the deepest rosters in the league and making the Panthers the gold standard of early USFL football.

The Panthers played two seasons in Michigan (1983–1984) before merging with the Oakland Invaders for the 1985 campaign as the league fought to survive. When the USFL folded after a disastrous 1986 antitrust suit, the Panthers became one of the most fondly remembered franchises in spring football history — a champion, a star factory, and a piece of Detroit-area sports identity.

The Panthers name was revived for the 2022 USFL relaunch and carried into the merged United Football League in 2024, giving a new generation of fans a chance to root for Michigan blue and silver on the gridiron once more.
