About the Hawaii Islanders

The Hawaii Islanders played twenty-seven seasons in the Pacific Coast League between 1961 and 1987, calling Honolulu Stadium home until 1975 and Aloha Stadium afterward. Founded when the PCL needed a new westernmost outpost, the Islanders served as the Triple-A affiliate of teams including the Kansas City Athletics, Chicago White Sox, California Angels, San Diego Padres, and Pittsburgh Pirates. Travel made the franchise unique — opposing teams arrived in Honolulu for ten-day swings rather than three-day series, and Islanders road trips often stretched a month at a time across the mainland.

The team won three PCL championships during its run and produced a long roll call of major-league talent on its way through Honolulu — Cy Young winner Randy Jones, slugger Dave Winfield, Rollie Fingers, Catfish Hunter, and Ozzie Smith all wore Hawaii uniforms during their farm-system climb. Owner Jack Quinn and longtime general managers built the Islanders into a community staple through aloha-shirt promotions, luau-themed nights, and one of the most distinctive identities in the Pacific Coast League. When the franchise relocated to Colorado Springs after 1987, it ended a quarter century of professional baseball in Hawaii — a chapter Royal Retros is proud to keep alive on the back of every Islanders throwback we ship.
