The Honolulu-based Islanders represented one of the biggest professional-sports success stories in Hawaiian history. Beyond producing star players, the franchise launched the careers of many notable sportscasters — Al Michaels, Ken Wilson, Les Keiter, Mel Proctor, and Al Conin all called Islanders games. Future stars Tony Gwynn, Barry Bonds, and Bobby Valentine all suited up at various points in the minor leagues Pacific Coast League.

Travel was always the challenge: visiting teams played series of as many as eight games at a time to avoid multiple trips across the Pacific. When attendance declined in the late 1980s, the franchise could no longer sustain the cost of long-haul road trips and relocated to Colorado after the 1987 season.
