About the Denver Rockets
The Denver Rockets were a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association, taking the floor for the league's inaugural 1967–68 season at the Denver Auditorium Arena. Originally founded by Bill Ringsby as a way to promote his trucking company (the team was nicknamed for "Rocket Truck Lines"), the Rockets made the playoffs in their inaugural season and remained a competitive ABA franchise throughout the league's nine-year run.
The Rockets are forever associated with two unforgettable players. Spencer Haywood was signed in 1969 as a 19-year-old after winning Olympic gold in the 1968 Mexico City Games; he averaged 30.0 points and 19.5 rebounds as a rookie, won ABA Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season, and forced the league's hardship-rule lawsuit that eventually opened pro basketball to underclassmen. Larry Jones — a six-foot-two scoring guard — averaged better than 25 points per game in three different seasons. The franchise also made an offer to Sam Jones (the Celtics legend) and Wilt Chamberlain, both of whom passed.
The Rockets rebranded as the Denver Nuggets in 1974 to avoid confusion with the NBA's expansion Houston Rockets, then joined the NBA in the 1976 ABA-NBA merger. The Nuggets continue today, but the seven Rockets seasons remain a foundational chapter in Denver pro basketball history. The Royal Retros Denver Rockets collection celebrates that ABA-era history with apparel for collectors, vintage-basketball fans and Mile High City sports historians.
