About the Columbus Chill

The Chill played in the East Coast Hockey League from 1991 to 1999, owned by Horizon Marketing's David Paitson and David O'Connor and built around aggressive guerrilla marketing in a non-traditional hockey city. Their home, the Ohio State Fair Coliseum, was a 6,800-seat barn the Chill made famous by selling out 80-plus consecutive home games in the mid-1990s — a Minor Pro Hockey record at the time — thanks to promotions like "Riot Night" t-shirts and irreverent in-arena entertainment.

On the ice, head coach Terry Ruskowski (a former WHA and NHL veteran) led the Chill to multiple winning seasons and a Riley Cup playoff appearance, with players like Jason Christie, Brian McKee, and Barry Dreger headlining the rosters. Off the ice, the Chill's success made the case to NHL ownership that Columbus could support major-league hockey — a case that became the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2000. The Chill folded after the Blue Jackets were awarded, but their cult following has only grown. The merchandise has aged into one of the most sought-after minor-league throwbacks of any decade.
