About the Baltimore Stallions

The Baltimore Stallions are one of the most fascinating one-off stories in pro football history — an American CFL franchise that won the Grey Cup, beat Canadian teams at their own game and then disappeared after just two seasons because the Cleveland Browns relocated to Baltimore. The Stallions joined the CFL in 1994 as part of the league's American expansion (originally known as the Baltimore CFLers and Baltimore Football Club before the Stallions name was settled on for 1995 due to NFL trademark concerns) and immediately became the league's most successful U.S. team, drawing big crowds to Memorial Stadium.

The 1995 Stallions are CFL legend. Behind quarterback Tracy Ham, running back Mike Pringle (who set CFL single-season rushing records), receiver Chris Armstrong and head coach Don Matthews, Baltimore went 15-3, dominated the South Division and won the 83rd Grey Cup over the Calgary Stampeders 37–20 — making them the only American-based team ever to lift the Grey Cup. Pringle was named Grey Cup MVP, and the franchise's two-year combined record was an extraordinary 27-9.

The CFL's American experiment collapsed quickly after that championship season — partly because the Cleveland Browns relocated to Baltimore in 1996 to become the Baltimore Ravens, taking the city back for the NFL. The Stallions relocated to Montreal and were rebooted as the new Montreal Alouettes, where they continue today. But the Baltimore-era Stallions remain an iconic chapter in CFL history, a testament to American football fans who embraced three-down football, and a reminder of just how good a U.S. team could be in the Canadian league.
