Buffalo played all four AAFC seasons at Civic Stadium, later known as War Memorial Stadium. The club entered as the Bisons in 1946, then changed its name to the Bills the following year. Quarterback George Ratterman arrived in 1947 and turned the team into a contender: Buffalo tied for the East lead in 1948, won a divisional playoff over Baltimore, and reached the AAFC Championship before losing to Cleveland.

When the league dissolved after 1949, only three AAFC clubs were absorbed into the older league — Buffalo, despite a fan petition and fundraising drive, was not one of them. The franchise folded, and the city went without major pro football until a new team took the field in 1960, adopting the Bills name for good.
