League: World Football League  Years Active: 1974-1975

The WFL was meant to spread the game of football across the globe with plans of expanding to Europe and Asia. Dozens of NFL players came to the league with the promise of big contracts. Problems began early when the only team outside the US was prevented from playing in Canada and other teams folded before ever playing a game. Financial problems became so bad in the first season that the MVP award had to be paid in cash at the ceremony because checks were not an option. The league tried one more season in 1975, but folded halfway through.
