The World Hockey Association (WHA) was a major-league professional hockey league that operated from 1972 to 1979 as a direct competitor to the established top tier of North American professional hockey. Across seven seasons the WHA reshaped the economics of professional hockey, signed superstars including Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe to landscape-changing contracts, brought major-league hockey to a dozen new markets, and gave teenage phenoms — Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and others — their first professional opportunities.

The Avco World Trophy was the WHA championship, awarded across seven seasons to franchises including the New England Whalers, Houston Aeros, Winnipeg Jets, and Quebec Nordiques. When the WHA dissolved in 1979, four of its remaining franchises — the Whalers, Nordiques, Winnipeg Jets, and Edmonton Oilers — were absorbed into the major professional hockey league, where they would continue play in subsequent decades. The WHA's seven-year run remains one of the most consequential alternative-league experiments in the history of North American professional sports.
