The Vancouver Royals were born in 1967 as the Vancouver Royal Canadians, a charter member of the United Soccer Association — a league that imported entire European and South American clubs for a season, with Vancouver's entry a repackaged Sunderland A.F.C. from England. When that league merged with a rival to form the North American Soccer League (NASL) for 1968, the club was renamed the Royals.
For that lone NASL season the Royals were led by player-coach Ferenc Puskás — the legendary Hungarian forward and one of the greatest players in the history of the game — skating out before fans at Empire Stadium. The club folded after 1968 when the young league contracted from seventeen teams to five, but its brush with one of soccer's all-time greats makes it an unforgettable footnote in North American soccer history.
