The Tulsa Roughnecks joined the North American Soccer League (NASL) in 1978 as the relocated Team Hawaii franchise, setting up at Skelly Stadium on the University of Tulsa campus. Backed by passionate crowds, the Roughnecks became one of the league's most beloved small-market clubs.
Their crowning moment came in 1983, when one of the lowest-budgeted teams in the league caught fire down the stretch under coach Terry Hennessey and won Soccer Bowl '83, defeating the Toronto Blizzard 2–0 before more than 60,000 fans in Vancouver. The Roughnecks played through the 1984 season before folding, but their name lived on in Tulsa soccer for decades to come.
