The Toronto Northmen were the originally announced 1974 charter franchise of the WFL but never played a single game. Owner John Bassett signed major NFL stars including Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield, and Jim Kiick from the Miami Dolphins to play in Toronto.
The Canadian government, led by Health and Welfare Minister Marc Lalonde, moved to block the franchise via the Canadian Football Act — protecting the CFL Argonauts from American pro football competition. Before the season began, Bassett relocated the franchise to Memphis as the Southmen — making Toronto's WFL chapter one of pro football's most famous never-played franchises.
