The Topeka Scarecrows brought professional hockey to the Kansas state capital in 1995, joining the revived Central Hockey League (CHL). Playing at the Kansas Expocentre Landon Arena, the Scarecrows leaned heavily into a Wizard-of-Oz-inspired identity that became one of the most distinctive themed marketing efforts in 1990s minor-pro hockey.

The Scarecrows built solid Topeka crowds across six seasons before financial pressures and league restructuring forced the franchise to fold after the 2000–01 season. The Wizard-of-Oz styling — built around the iconic scarecrow logo and Kansas-themed branding — remains one of the most-collected pieces of late-1990s CHL apparel.
