The Honolulu-based Hawaiians were charter members of The World Football League (WFL) in 1974.  The team was originally going to be called the Honolulu Warriors but could not use that name due to it being the nickname of the University of Hawaii athletic teams. Instead, they were named simply The Hawaiians, though the continental media sometimes mistakenly referred to them as the Honolulu Hawaiians. Due to travel concerns, the team played its home games on Sunday, whereas the rest of the league played on Wednesdays with one nationally broadcast game on Thursday night. The Hawaiians knocked off the Southern California Sun in the first round of the playoffs, but fell the following week to the eventual league champions, The Birmingham Americans. The team looked to improve in 1975 with the addition of running back Calvin Hill. However, the former Cowboy suffered a season-ending knee injury early in the season, and the team limped to a 4-7 record before league folded on October 22, 1975. Footage of the Hawaiians home game versus the Philadelphia Bell on October 11, 1975, was used in the original Hawaii Five-0 episode "Blood Money is Hard to Wash," which aired March 3, 1977.
