Team Hawaii played a single season in the North American Soccer League in 1977, the league's attempt at a Pacific outpost after the franchise's previous two years as the San Antonio Thunder. Based at Aloha Stadium and coached by Hubert Vogelsinger, the club went 11-15 for fourth in the South Division, missing the playoffs while drawing the second-lowest average attendance in an eighteen-team league.

Flying a team to Honolulu and back every other week was never going to pay for itself. After one season in the islands the franchise moved to the mainland for 1978, and the league itself lasted only another six years.
