Founded in 1967 in the National Professional Soccer League, the Stars joined the newly merged North American Soccer League in 1968 and played through 1977 — the city's first professional soccer club of the modern era.

This design is the club's later Gateway Arch crest, worn through the mid-1970s, when the Stars fielded an almost entirely American-born roster aside from English player-coach John Sewell. In a league stocked with imports, no other club could claim anything close — and it worked, because St. Louis had the deepest youth soccer culture in the country to draw on.

The Stars split home games between Busch Memorial Stadium and the smaller Francis Field on the Washington University campus before relocating to Anaheim in 1978.
