With hall of famer Rod Thorn as head coach and a young Bob Costas as the play by play announcer the Spirits had a successful first season. However, the team struggled in its second year and rarely drew crowds of even 1,000 people. The team planned to move to Salt Lake City but the ABA merged with the NBA before the season. When the team was not included in the merger, the owners refused to take the NBA's buyout. Instead, the team received revenue from the surviving teams for 35 years.
