After failing multiple times on the east coast, the Jersey Knights of the World Hockey Association (WHA) were purchased by McDonald's owner Ray Kroc and rebranded as the Mariners. The team was competitive, making the playoffs every season, but it became apparent there was little interest for hockey in San Diego. Kroc spent most of the team's existence trying to sell the team until it finally folded.
