The Iguanas were the first expansion team the revived Central Hockey League (CHL) ever granted, arriving at Freeman Coliseum in 1994. Bill Goldsworthy took the first bench but stepped down ten games in for health reasons, and John Torchetti finished the job — carrying San Antonio to the league finals in each of the franchise's first two seasons.

The trouble came from inside their own building. Before the 1996–97 season a rival pro club moved into Freeman Coliseum as well, and the arena hosted 74 hockey games that winter. Squeezed by a bigger budget across the hallway, Iguanas attendance fell by half; the team lost the court fight over the lease and shut down after the season. New ownership revived the franchise in 1998 and kept it alive four more years before it closed for good in 2002. This Halloween treatment puts that Iguanas identity across the full jersey.
