The Rochester Lancers were the city's first professional soccer club, beginning in the American Soccer League in 1967 before stepping up to the North American Soccer League (NASL) in 1970. In that first NASL season the Lancers won it all, taking the 1970 league championship over the Washington Darts on aggregate goals.
The Lancers spent eleven NASL seasons in Rochester, playing home matches at Holleder Stadium, and were the only NASL club ever to compete in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. The franchise folded after the 1980 season.
