The Pittsburgh Phantoms were a charter member of the 1967 National Professional Soccer League, one of two rival leagues that merged a year later to form the North American Soccer League. Backed by a twenty-man ownership group drawn largely from the city's other sports investors, the Phantoms played their home matches at Forbes Field, sharing the ballpark for a single summer.

The club endured a turbulent debut season, cycling through four head coaches before finishing fifth at 10-14-7, with German forward Manfred Rummel leading the way on 14 goals. Heavy financial losses forced the Phantoms out of business at the close of the 1967 season, and the franchise did not continue into the merged league.
