The Philadelphia Spartans were a charter member of the 1967 National Professional Soccer League, one of two rival circuits that combined the following year to create the North American Soccer League. Owned by Art Rooney, already a considerable name in Pennsylvania sport, the Spartans played out of Temple Stadium in North Philadelphia and finished a competitive second in the Eastern Division at 14-9-9, narrowly missing the playoffs.

Argentine defender Rubén Navarro took over as player-coach midseason and was named the league's Most Valuable Player, while countryman Orlando Garro led the club with 12 goals. When the two leagues merged for 1968, the Spartans did not continue, closing one of Philadelphia's earliest pro soccer chapters.
