The Fury joined the North American Soccer League in 1978 under an ownership group reported to include several well-known rock musicians alongside more conventional investors — a story that put the club in the papers well beyond the sports pages. On the field results were harder to come by: Philadelphia never posted a winning record in three seasons, though a forgiving playoff format let a 12-18 squad sneak into the 1978 postseason under player-coach Alan Ball, and the club reached the second round in 1979.

Attendance never caught up to the ownership group's star power. The Fury averaged 8,075 in 1978 before posting the league's lowest figures in both 1979 (5,624) and 1980 (4,465). After the 1980 season the franchise was sold and relocated, ending a brief and strange Philadelphia run.
