The Philadelphia Firebirds played five seasons of professional minor-league hockey at the Philadelphia Civic Center, founded in 1974 in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) and joining the broader Minor League Hockey ranks after the NAHL folded in 1977. The Firebirds gave Philadelphia a same-market alternative to the established top-tier franchise across town, building a small but loyal following in the city's hockey-passionate sports scene.

The Firebirds folded after the 1978–79 season as the difficulty of competing for hockey attention in a Philadelphia market firmly committed to the established top-tier team made the operation unsustainable. The firebird-themed identity and the bright orange-and-red color scheme have made the Firebirds jersey one of the more distinctive pieces of obscure mid-1970s East Coast minor-pro hockey apparel.
