The Philadelphia Bell were charter members of the World Football League (WFL) in 1974. The team featured the quarterback some referred to as the “minor league Joe Namath,” King Corcoran, as well as Vince Papale, the subject of the hit film Invincible. The Bell managed just shy of a .500 record, though few fans noticed. After an opening night crowd of 55,000, attendance plummeted. It was soon revealed the big opening night was the result of free or steeply discounted tickets. Only a few thousand fans had actually paid for tickets. At one point, only 750 fans turned up for a game against the Shreveport Steamer at cavernous JFK Stadium, a facility that could seat 100,000.  Despite all this, the Bell were financially sound, unlike many other WFL teams. 

Still, attendance lagged even in smaller Franklin Field in 1975. That was also the year the Bell made sports history by hiring pro football's first African-American head coach, former NFL great Willie Wood.
