The Newark Eagles came to be as the result of the merger between two teams in the Negro National League: the Newark Dodgers and Brooklyn Eagles. The result was a legendary powerhouse that would feature seven Hall of Famers and future Cy Young Award winner Don Newcombe.

Co-owner Effa Manley managed day-to-day operations and became the first — and to date only — woman inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In later years, the NLB franchise moved to Houston and became the Houston Eagles. Hall of Fame players included Ray Dandridge, Leon Day, Larry Doby, Monte Irvin, Biz Mackey, Mule Suttles, and Willie Wells.
