The Minnesota Kicks were one of the great success stories of North American Soccer League (NASL), packing Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington from 1976 to 1981. Born when local owners bought and rebranded a struggling franchise, the Kicks became an instant phenomenon, regularly drawing more than twenty thousand fans and once setting a league attendance record. On the field they were a powerhouse, winning four straight division titles to open their run and reaching the playoffs in all six seasons. Off the field, the legendary tailgating scene in the Met parking lot became a cultural touchstone. Financial losses finally ended the party after 1981.
