The IceGators turned Lafayette into the loudest building in minor league hockey. From their 1995 debut at the Cajundome they drew crowds no other team in the league has matched before or since — four straight seasons averaging better than 9,700 a night, peaking at 11,433 in 1996–97, and nine of the ten largest playoff crowds on record.

The hockey held up its end. Lafayette won division titles in eight of its ten seasons and reached the championship finals twice, in 1997 and again in 2000. The 2001–02 club was the best of the lot: 56 wins, 116 points, and just two home losses all season. John Spoltore anchored the offense with four 100-point campaigns, while defenseman Chris Valicevic made seven all-star teams from the blue line. Money troubles finally closed the team in 2005.
