Founded by Jack Kent Cooke — already the owner of two of the city's major-league franchises — as one of twelve original members of the 1967 United Soccer Association, the Wolves were essentially Wolverhampton Wanderers playing under a Los Angeles crest for the summer. The league's format had American ownership groups import entire European and South American clubs wholesale to stock their rosters. Cooke reportedly considered "Los Angeles Zorros" before settling on Wolves, a nod to Wolverhampton's own nickname.

The gambit paid off immediately: Los Angeles topped the Western Conference, then beat the Washington Whips 6-5 in sudden-death overtime in front of 17,824 fans at the Coliseum to win the championship. When the league merged with its rival to form the North American Soccer League in 1968, the import-club strategy was scrapped — the Wolves fielded an entirely new roster and coaching staff for their final season before folding.
