The Los Angeles Aztecs joined the North American Soccer League (NASL) as an expansion club in 1974 and made an immediate splash, winning the league championship in their very first season — edging the Miami Toros in a penalty shootout after a 3–3 draw. Few franchises in American soccer have ever announced themselves so dramatically.

The Aztecs became known as much for star power as for results. Singer Elton John joined the ownership group as a minority stakeholder in 1975, and the club brought in Manchester United legend George Best in the mid-1970s and Dutch icon Johan Cruyff at the end of the decade — Cruyff was named the league's Most Valuable Player in his debut season. The Aztecs folded after the 1981 NASL season.
