The Spurs began life in 1967 as the Chicago Spurs of the National Professional Soccer League, relocating to Kansas City when that league merged with the United Soccer Association to form the North American Soccer League in 1968. Playing out of Municipal Stadium and later Pembroke Stadium, Kansas City was the league's top gate draw in 1968 and reached the semifinals.

The Spurs broke through in 1969, winning the championship outright. Success on the field couldn't outlast the arrival of a major-league baseball expansion club that same year, which crowded the Spurs out of the city's summer sports calendar, and they folded after the 1970 season.
