The Kansas City Scouts spent just two seasons at the major professional hockey level — and almost no time on home ice in their inaugural campaign. With Kemper Arena's construction still being completed when the 1974–75 season opened, the expansion Scouts played their first eight games on the road (losing seven and tying one) before finally making their home debut on November 2, 1974, against the Chicago Black Hawks.

Rookie first-round draft pick Wilf Paiement scored the Scouts' first-ever goal in that home debut. Like most expansion teams, the Scouts struggled, going 15–54–11 in their first season (still the better of the two) and averaging just 8,218 fans in the 17,000-seat Kemper Arena. Inflated player costs and weak attendance combined with the Midwest economic downturn doomed the franchise, and after two seasons the Scouts relocated to Denver in 1976 to become the Colorado Rockies — the second of three franchise moves (Kansas City → Denver → New Jersey) that would eventually produce the modern New Jersey Devils. The franchise that began life as the Legacy Hockey Scouts now exists as one of the sport's true survivors.
