The Denver Gold were one of the original United States Football League (USFL)'s mainstays, playing all three seasons at Mile High Stadium. Coached initially by Red Miller and later by Mouse Davis (1985), with quarterback Craig Penrose and later Vince Evans leading the offense, the Gold went 7–11 in 1983, 9–9 in 1984, and 11–7 in 1985 — earning a playoff berth in their final season before falling to the Memphis Showboats in the quarterfinals. Owners Ron Blanding and later Doug Spedding kept the franchise running on a leaner budget than many of the league's free-spending teams, and Denver consistently drew strong crowds to Mile High. The Gold's 1985 playoff appearance gave the league one of its most impressive single-season turnarounds.
