The Denver Dynamite were one of the four charter franchises of the AFL when the league launched in 1987, playing at McNichols Sports Arena. The Dynamite captured the inaugural ArenaBowl I that same year — defeating the Pittsburgh Gladiators 45–16 — making Denver the first city to win a professional arena football championship.

The Dynamite played five seasons in the AFL before folding after 1991. Quarterback Whit Taylor led the inaugural championship squad under head coach Tim Marcum, who would go on to become one of the most accomplished coaches in arena football history. The 1987 title remains a foundational moment in the early history of the league.
