The Cleveland Thunderbolts played three seasons in the AFL from 1992 to 1994 at the Richfield Coliseum, the longtime home of the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers. The Thunderbolts originated as the Columbus Thunderbolts in 1991 before relocating to the Cleveland market.
The franchise folded after 1994, but the Thunderbolts gave Cleveland its first arena football experience and laid groundwork for the city's later AFL representation through the Columbus Destroyers (a separate franchise) in the 2000s.
