The Spiders gained their nickname when a team executive who was also a sports writer quipped that with the team's skinny players and black uniforms they looked like Spiders. The name stuck and the team was competitive for most of it's history winning a championship in 1895. In 1899, ownership bought the St Louis Perfectos and moved all of the Spiders' star players to St Louis. With basically a minor league roster, the Spiders went 20–134 which still stands as the worst record in major league history.
