The Cleveland Force were charter members of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) in 1978 and became one of the most successful franchises in the league — both on the indoor pitch and at the gate. A 1986 home game against the Minnesota Strikers drew over 20,000 fans, and the Force regularly outdrew the city's pro basketball team.
A disagreement between ownership and the league caused the Force to leave the MISL in 1988. They were succeeded the following season by the Cleveland Crunch.
