The Chicago Mustangs were a charter member of the 1967 United Soccer Association, owned by Arthur Allyn Jr. — already a part-owner of one of the city's baseball clubs — and playing home matches at Comiskey Park. In their debut season the Mustangs were an entirely imported roster: an Italian first-division side played under the Chicago identity, standard practice among clubs in that league.

When the league merged with its rival to form the North American Soccer League in 1968, the Mustangs continued as an actual Chicago-based club. Polish forward John Kowalik had a season for the ages, taking MVP honors with 30 goals and 9 assists — marks that stood as league records for a decade — before the franchise folded at the end of the 1968 campaign.
